Acupuncture Without Needles

Tui na is a therapeutic massage based on the principles of Chinese Medicine. Massage is an incredibly ancient type of treatment, one that we instinctively use on ourselves and our children. In China and Japan it was traditionally the first treatment used on children and infants.

Because it works on the same principles as acupuncture it has many of the same benefits, but can be used when acupuncture is not suitable, for example with children, or people who do not like needles.

In general Tui na is gentler and has a less lasting effect on imbalances than acupuncture, but some people find they respond better to Tui na. Many people find Tui na deeply relaxing and enjoyable. Tara and Lucie are both trained acupuncturists and can combine acupuncture and Tui na together if necessary. Yoshi uses a much deeper Yang stye Tui Na technique suitable for injuries and pain.

What Happens During the Treatment?

A consultation is taken, as with acupuncture. You could be asked questions about your main complaint as well as about your lifestyle, diet, emotions and medical history. For the first treatment this can take 10-15 mins. Tui na is often performed through a cloth, or with the patient fully clothed. If you are having cupping or Gua Sha then it is directly on the skin.

Gua Sha (rubbing the skin), cupping or moxibustion (heat treatment with a herb called “moxa”), and cupping can also be used as appropriate and will sometimes we apply Chinese medicinal oils directly on the skin.

Tui na is quite different to other massage. I went as I wanted some support on my fertility journey that was not acupuncture as I’m a bit nervous of needles. It was deeply revitalising and I felt that it really helped with my stress and anxiety. It was very comforting and I felt it worked at quite a deep level. Thankyou Tara for all your support.

TABLE THAI massage

Thai yoga massage, a key component of traditional Thai medicine, uses acupressure and stretching to energise the body and harmonise mental and emotional wellbeing.

Applying acupressure with fingers, hands, feet, knees and elbows along the energy lines of the body, the Thai yoga massage therapist aims to help release blockages and restore balance. Passive stretches are incorporated to improve flexibility and invite a sense of spaciousness into the body.

Thai yoga massage is delivered without oil and the recipient remains fully clothed throughout. This 60-minute treatment is adapted to be delivered on a regular massage table.

Both preventative and therapeutic, yoga massage was first developed in India at the time of the Buddha, picking up elements of Chinese medicine as it was transmitted directly from teacher to student on its way to Thailand. It has been used for hundreds of years to alleviate the symptoms of headache, back pain and stiffness in the shoulders and neck, while stimulating and strengthening the nervous, respiratory, circulatory, digestive and immune systems, and boosting energy levels.

At its best, a Thai yoga massage treatment can become a deep moving meditation for both practitioner and client, engendering a profound sense of tranquillity and wellbeing.

“There is one thing that when cultivated and regularly practised, leads to deep spiritual intention, to peace, to mindfulness and clear comprehension, to vision and knowledge, to a happy life here and now and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening. And what is that one thing? It is mindfulness centred on the body.” - Anguttara Nikaya
